Preparing to work with sound effects

1. Why do you think we use SFX's in TV and Film productions?

We use sound effects in TV and Film productions because it makes it more interesting to watch and also makes it more realistic depending on what genre of programme or film your making. We use them because you might not be able to pick up the real sound of something when filming on set.

2. What are the advantages of using SFX's in Tv and Film?

It makes the sounds more clearer and louder. And creates a better atmosphere for the film/programme.

3. What are the disadvantages of using SFX's?

If your making a drama or something about everyday life the normal sounds which have been made loud and outside the set can sound too out the top and fake, almost cartoon like which isn't what you want when making a drama piece.

4. What is the job description of Foley artist?

Foley artists are people who create sounds/noises outside the set/studio. They use different objects, props or clothes to make other noises such as snow crunching, birds wings flapping, bones breaking etc.

Footsteps: Stamp their feet on a marble slab. Change their shoes for different scenes.

Rain: Salt on tin foil.

A person punching another person: A heavy phone book is dropped.

Bone or head injury noise: Frozen romaine lettuce.

Bird wings flapping: A pair of gloves.

Evaluation

We started by filming in three different locations and read a script. We first used a shotgun mic to record us talking. However when we looked at our footage the sound was not good, you could hear a lot of background sound such as wind and other people talking and walking.

We then thought of how we could improve it and then later went and filmed it again but this time used tie mic's on both of us to record us speaking. We also changed our last location because it was just too loud and busy for us to film in. We watched the footage back and found that there was no background noises due to the mic's being close to us rather then far away. We also saw that there was no wind or rustling and you could hear both of us clearer.

We have learnt that even if your outside you can still use a tie mic to get better sound. And making sure that your location your filming in isn't too busy or loud. Also make sure you know what your saying first because it just wastes filming time.

We worked very well together, we discussed what to do in each location and discussed how we could resolve our problems.

Analyzing second footage.

After watching our second recording we have discussed that by using a tie mic instead of a shotgun you get less background noise and you can hear what we are saying more.

The first location is in the classroom which is good anyways because there is no background noises at all. The second location which is outside and is a lot better because you can't hear wind or any people walking past. The third location in our busy classroom is still better then last time, you can still hear people around but you can hear us clearer.
